Brain Briefing

Although technology, such as computers, has become an integral part of our curriculums, we must keep in mind that younger children need interaction with their peers and adults for learning. There is also the theory by Jane Healy (1998) that this is the age at which children should be producing their own visual images rather than having images given to them via computer, video, etc.

For Physical and Motor Development

When children are pretend playing, have them write a grocery list if they are playing house, a prescription if they are doctors, a phone message, or a “Do Not Disturb” sign.

Continue using obstacle courses outside or inside to fine-tune those gross motor skills.

Play Pass the Ball See how many different ways you can get a ball around a circle or the room. One person with the ball bounces it to another, and each successive player does the same. When the ball reaches the sender, the one next to the sender starts it in a different way—two hands, one hand, high, low, under leg, backwards, etc.
